Lashes curling at 90 degrees, & how to get smokey eyes with kohl eyeliner?

Most of the time I can't get the curler close enough to the base of my lashes to prevent this. I already curl my lashes in 3 sections, but the problem is the very base still sticks out at 90 degrees. ]:

Has it got anything to do with the curler quality? (Mine doesn't have a brand, I don't know where it came from haha.) I was thinking of maybe buying a Shiseido but I don't know how much it is (I'm on a beauty budget ^^;.) Or maybe I just shouldn't curl the base?

Also I use the pencil Revlon Colourstay eyeliner, but I want to get a slight smokey look. Can I achieve that using a kohl pencil (Revlon or Mac)? What would I smudge it with? (I don't own any brushes or eyeshadow lol, I'm just looking for a quick morning eyeliner routine. ^^)

Shiseido curlers are about $20 dollars:

If you want a smokey eye effect with your eyeliner, you can either do this:

Option 1:

Buy a palette that contains a lot of dark smokey eye colors. May I suggest something around $5-6 dollars:

Then, buy an eyeliner bush and use it to put the dark eyeshadow around your eyes, almost like an eyeliner but giving it a smokey look:

This is the eyeliner brush you want:

Option 2:

Keep using your eyeliner, but to smudge your eyeliner, use a brush that looks like this:

this is cheap and perfect for applying and smudging the eyeliner. you smudge it with the part that looks bigger (almost like a cone ball)Lashes curling at 90 degrees, %26amp; how to get smokey eyes with kohl eyeliner?
That's usually just something you have to live with. But usually for a smokey eye your putting on false lashes and then curling them ontop of it. And then adding mascara.

For a smoker look you could use a liquid eyeliner on the water line of your upper eyelid. And then add a base to your eyelid and then put in the desired colour

You can really youtube all this
Don't press the curler down all the way and curl your lashes in more then one spot.

and for smokey eyes use something like

and smudge it with a cotton swab after you line your eyes then line then once again over the smudged out eyeliner so it looks smokey. Personally I use Urban Decay eyeliner in Zero.
